The process of making Mitti Attar involves heavenly steps that needs to be taken care with specialists. Selecting the clay The first step is to choose the right type of clay, which is usually sourced from regions known for their distinct fragrance after rainfall. The clay is typically collected from specific areas with the desired aromatic qualities.
The collected clay is washed and cleaned to remove impurities and any foreign particles. Soaking the clay After cleaning, the clay is soaked in water for several hours or overnight to allow it to absorb moisture. The legendary perfumers of ancient Kannauj created a unique scent that would capture the fragrance of earth when first touched by the monsoon rains.
Distillation A copper still (deg) is used for the distillation process. The soaked clay is mixed with a specific amount of water, and sandalwood oil or carrier oil is added to the mixture. The mixture is then heated gently, and the aromatic vapors are collected and condensed into a receiver. This process allows the fragrance of the clay to mix with the oil, resulting in the creation of the Attar.
After the distillation process, the Attar is left to age for a period of time, usually several weeks to a few months. During this time, the fragrance matures and intensifies, leading to a richer and more refined scent.
Once the Attar has aged to the desired level, it is carefully bottled and sealed to preserve its unique fragrance.

As with other traditional attars, the making of Mitti Attar is considered an art form that has been passed down through generations in certain regions of India.
